Timothy C. Matthews, QC, TEP, BSc, JD, BCL is a senior partner of Stewart McKelvey, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, practising estate and tax planning and administration. He is past Chair of the Society of Estate and Trust Practitioners (STEP) Atlantic, past STEP Canada Education Chair, and Chair of the STEP Canada Trusts and Estates Technical Committee. He has received the STEP Founder’s Award.
Mr. Matthews is an Academician of The International Academy of Estates and Trusts Law and a Fellow of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He is a past Chair of the national Wills Estates & Trusts Section of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), and a past President of the CBA – Nova Scotia. He has been honoured with the Distinguished Service Award from the CBA - Nova Scotia.
A graduate of Dalhousie University and Oxford University, he teaches Equity & Trusts at Dalhousie’s Schulich School of Law, having previously taught Estate Planning and Law of Succession. He is a member of the Halifax Estate Planning Council and a participant and presenter in the Senior Estates & Trusts Practitioners’ Forum, Cambridge, Ontario. He has been a frequent speaker, panellist and contributor of papers for STEP, the CBA, the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, and The International Academy of Estate and Trust Lawyers.
Mr. Matthews has been deeply committed to community charitable organizations, including serving on the boards of Symphony Nova Scotia Foundation, Scotia Chamber Players Society, Nova Scotia Talent Trust Foundation, The Halifax Foundation, and Halifax Youth Foundation.
Mr. Matthews is listed in Best Lawyers in Canada directory (Trusts and Estates), is rated AV by Martindale-Hubbell, and is recognized by Lexpert in Estates and Personal Tax Planning/Estate Litigation and in Charities/Not-for-Profit.
